A true runway masterpiece from the Yohji Yamamoto fall/winter 2020-collection.
The basis for this piece is an oversized, single breasted trench. But – there are three rows of buttons, which also allow it to be worn double breasted, concealing the center row of buttons.
Onto this, the designer has added an extra collar, from which two wide buttoned panels flow down the shoulders, where they loop into buttoned eupalettes before running down the front.
Here, they button to the two outer rows of buttons on each side, running down the full length of the garment. When the panels are buttoned together, they make a seemingly triple breasted coat – or they can be partially buttoned or left open to let the material cascade.
The panels can also be unbuttoned from their respective outer button rows, letting them hang from the shoulders. For an even more daring avant-garde look; button them to the opposite side for maximum structure and depth.
By adding fasteners in the waist without including a belt, the designer appeals to the client’s creativity: Use a belt, a rope or even a scarf to cinch in the waist by tightening towards the back – or leave it hanging loose.
The tailoring of this piece reveals another a stroke of genius when it comes to sizing: The generous amount of material and the clever design of the shoulders makes this coat in size 3 work well on sizes small to triple extra large. Wear with absolutely anything.
This piece will lift any outfit immensly.
